Surroundings

Surf & Yoga Mirissa is located in the third bay of Mirissa, which is a quite end of busy Mirissa beach. With just a hop from the beach, you reach a beautiful little third bay meant for snorkelling, sun and sea bathing, or just reading a book under a coconut tree. You can take a beach stroll to the right and reach the main beach which has many restaurants, or do a small hike to the left and reach the hilltop to visit the other beach, the temple or observe the sunset. The are three surf spots in the third bay itself, and on the left, Parrot rock break, and Mirissa beach and point breaks, giving any level of surfer a great choice.

The Surf

Sri Lanka’s south west coast is a wave garden with more than 15+ surf spots accessible within easy reach from the camp, with most of the breaks located within 10 minutes.

Surf Team Sri Lanka, the manager of Surf & Yoga, Mirissa, is a certified surf camp / school of International Surfing Association. This means that all our trainers have undergone at least ISA level 1 certification for surf coaches.

HOW WE COACH

We aim to keep things a bit different. From our fine surrounding at the guesthouse, the surf points near-by, our certified surf coaches / guides, to the equipment that we use, we aim to have the highest regional standard. Therefore we’ve designed everything on our surf coaching courses to make sure that you get the most out of your surfing during your stay with us.

Our surf programs are comprehensive in that it not only includes plenty of time in the surf, but video analysis & feedback and surf theory classes, delivered by our team over the surfing week. Each surfing session is progressive and goal oriented for each of the participants, and at the end of the surf session, your coach will be discussing with you how you progressed learning that new skill taught on the beach.

We are careful not to mix ability levels. Therefore there will be a maximum of 4:1 student instructor ratio at all times. This will also mean that you will never have to wait for others to keep up, or feel left behind looking at the good surfers.

LOCATION & SURF CHECK

Sri Lanka’s south west coast is a wave garden with more than 15+ surf spots within easy reach from the camp, with most of the breaks located within 10 minutes.

We have a comprehensive list of surf spots listed here.
Every morning we will do a surf check online and with our local surfing friends and decide which beaches to head to. This will depend on factors such as ability level of each group, and the swell conditions. This means that the chances are high that you’ll have ideal conditions whatever level of surfer you are.

YOUR FIRST SURF LESSON

Some people are extremely confident in the waves, while other people are intimidated by just being in the ocean environment, but everyone, without exception, enjoys their first day surfing.

The location of your first surf lesson is Weligama beach break. We are blessed to have one of the finest beginner surfing beaches in south Sri Lanka. The water is warm, perfect sandy bottom, shallow water, and no dangerous sea life or rip current makes this the ideal start point for your surfing vacation.

First element of your first surf lesson will be on the beach warming up, introducing you to the surf break and your beginner board. Our trainers will move on to teach you laying on the board at the correct position, paddling on the board, and pop-up (the jump), or, if this is not available for you, another relevant method of getting up such as a 4-step method.

Now you’re ready to enter the water and enjoy the surf, but not before you learn the necessary safety techniques.

Your first day of surfing will finish with a summary of the skills which will be covered during the upcoming week, as well as what they will lead on to and that’s where the fun starts… For most of you, within five days you can aim to go out and start catching waves all on your own!

VIDEO ANALYSIS AND SURF THEORY

In addition to plenty of time in the water, all of our guests will also receive theory lessons as well. Depending on which package that you book, you also have the option to get your surfing videos reviewed by our surfing team.

The Yoga

Yoga complements surfing in many ways. It strengthens three main skills any beginner surfer should aim to develop in the medium run ; Upper body strength, Endurance, and Flexibility. No matter your age, size or fitness level, the yoga programme is suitable for all levels of experience from beginners to advanced; our camp instructor will adapt poses to suit your ability.

Yoga at Surf&Yoga Mirissa will be done on the lawn in the shade of palm trees, on the patio or we will have Sunset yoga at the cliff overlooking the Indian ocean and beautiful Sri Lankan sunset. Full moon yoga, evening classes, SUP yoga and private sessions are available upon request. Daily drop-in classes are at 7.30 AM, 10.30 AM and 4.30 PM.

A new and exciting addition is Aerial yoga which is held daily at 7 AM and 5 PM on the rooftop overlooking the jungle!

How Are The Waves In south Sri Lanka?

The reason to run our surf camp in South Sri Lanka is because of the consistency of the surf as well as its favourable weather and winds. It rarely gets big and it rarely gets flat.
